What is POTA?
Parks on the Air® (POTA) is a popular ham radio program promoting emergency preparedness and portable operations from national/state parks and protected public lands. The program promotes outdoor radio communication and helps raise awareness about the importance of preserving natural spaces.
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran a special, year-long event in 2016 called NPOTA (National Parks on the Air) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. The NPOTA event was wildly popular, and when it concluded many amateur radio operators didn't want the portable operating fun to end.
In early 2017, a group of volunteers banded together to keep the spirit alive, and POTA was born. As participation numbers boomed, a dedicated nonprofit organization was established in 2018 to manage the program permanently. Today, POTA has evolved from a temporary ARRL special event into a massive worldwide radio-sport phenomenon, with participants activating parks across more than 90 countries.
